    I'm not a smartphone user but really like the look of the Zenwatch just as a cool watch with some apps and different watch faces etc. I haven't found anything that answers whether the watch can be used just by itself without ever pairing it with a smartphone.

    yeah...it goes pretty batty without a sync for time telling purposes, especially if you let the battery die...
